Emissions attach to the journey, not the stay

The carbon cost of getting somewhere is fixed by the distance and the mode, whether you stay two nights or twelve. Divided by days away, a short trip therefore carries the highest emissions per day of any trip shape.

This is the single least comfortable fact about the weekend break, and it does not go away by being ignored. It also points directly at the fix, which is fewer long-distance journeys rather than shorter ones.

Short flights are the worst case per distance

Take-off and climb use a disproportionate share of a flight energy, so short hops emit more per unit of distance than long ones. That is precisely the segment weekend breaks tend to use.

It does not follow that long-haul is better overall, because total distance still dominates the absolute figure. It does follow that a short flight is a poor way to cover a distance that surface transport could handle.

Surface travel changes the figure sharply

Rail and coach travel over short distances are generally much lower emitting than the equivalent flight, though the size of the gap depends on how the electricity is generated and how full the service is. Driving alone is closer to flying than most people expect; driving with three or four people is not.

These comparisons vary by country and by year, so treat published figures as ranges rather than constants. The direction of the comparison is stable even where the numbers are not.

Frequency matters more than any single trip

One long-distance break a year is a very different footprint from a long-distance break every six weeks. Short breaks are attractive partly because they are repeatable, and repeatability is where the emissions accumulate. Someone who takes eight near-home breaks and one flight a year is in a different position from someone who flies eight times.

Counting journeys per year is a more useful habit than agonising over any individual one.

Offsetting is not a settlement

Voluntary offset quality has been widely questioned and the evidence for many schemes is weak. Treating an offset as cancellation of the emission is not supportable on current evidence. It may still be worth doing as a contribution rather than as an accounting entry.

The useful part is this: honesty about that distinction is more useful than either dismissing offsets or over-trusting them.

What actually reduces it

Going less far, going by surface transport, and going less often are the three changes that move the number. Staying longer when you do go far improves the emissions per day without reducing the total.

For most people, nothing you pack, and no choice of accommodation, comes close to the journey in significance. A site about short trips can say that plainly without telling anyone to stop travelling.
